The majority of Pakistani students think that their only choice is IELTS. It is not, and that supposition can cost time and money. The Department of Home Affairs fully accepts PTE Academic. Virtually all Australian universities and colleges also accept it. This resource is a fair comparison of PTE vs IELTS for Australian student visas. It discusses formats, score equivalents, costs, Karachi test centres, and appropriateness.
PTE Academic is an English test created by Pearson, a computer-based test. It evaluates listening, reading, speaking, and writing together. The whole test lasts about two hours.
The differences matter more than most students realise. The largest difference is in speaking assessment. PTE speaking is recorded and marked by a computer program.
The scoring is different as well. PTE scoring is completely automated, eliminating examiner subjectivity. PTE is based on integrated tasks. Speaking and reading can be scored for a single task. Listening and writing are scored the same when summative writing is done in writing of a spoken lecture. IELTS tests the skills individually.
PTE is clearly in the lead in results turnaround. An average PTE result takes 1 to 2 business days. Typical results for IELTS computer tests take three to five days. PTE is also more likely to have tests available. PTE has higher frequency, which has a short booking lead time.
There are two distinct bars, which students often mix up. The Department of Home Affairs determines the minimum visa. Following the modifications since 7 August 2025, an IELTS band score of approximately 6.0 is required for direct entry. That equates to approximately PTE 50. ELICOS course packaging reduces this to about IELTS 5.5, or about PTE 42.
Your university has its own, which is normally a higher requirement. The majority of bachelor’s and master’s programs require an overall IELTS score of 6.5. That is equivalent to about a PTE score of 58-65, depending on the institution. You should not only meet one bar requirement but the other as well. The test results should also be current at the time of lodging.
Those making a PTE vs IELTS for Australian student visa requirement must first check both requirements. The university requirement has been mentioned in your letter of offer.
This inquiry leads to undue panic amongst Pakistani students. The Department of Home Affairs is satisfied with both tests. They are both accepted by practically all Australian universities. PTE Academic is accepted in Group of Eight universities. Both tests are also accepted at TAFE colleges for private vocational providers.
IELTS, however, still has certain situations that favour it. Teacher registration authorities typically require IELTS Academic. Registration of nursing and midwifery by AHPRA accepts a number of tests but has its requirements. Academic IELTS is the only form of assessment accepted by AITSL for teacher skills assessment.
If you are moving towards teaching in Australia, do IELTS Academic. This will eliminate the need to take a second test several years later. The offer letter that you have received should always be confirmed. Institutional policy sometimes differs from program-level requirements.
The truth of the matter is that they both are not universally easier. Each is suited to different candidates.
Students who feel uneasy speaking in front of people tend to excel on the PTE. Feeling nervous in the presence of an examiner goes away when talking to a computer. This relieves a lot of anxiety for many Pakistani students. PTE is more rewarding for clear pronunciation and fluent delivery than for accent.
The algorithm evaluates intelligibility rather than a subjective assessment of accent. Students with strong technical English tend to perform well. PTE writing is more structure-based and formulaic. Students who study templates and apply them regularly perform well. There is also enhanced scoring consistency, as there is no examiner variation with automation. Quick turnaround assists students with strict intake timelines.
Students favor a human examiner with good conversational English. An actual examiner can read between the lines even though your language is defective. The algorithm is unable to generalise that flexibility. True language skill and diverse expression are rewarded in IELTS writing. This is usually preferred by students with strong backgrounds in essay writing.
Pakistan is also more conversant with the IELTS. Preparation materials, coaching, and peers’ experience are generally available. Familiarity saves many students time in preparation. IELTS has introduced One Skill Retake, which allows you to retake a single skill. The alternative is to save a lot of money in the event of one band’s failure.
Be honest with yourself and ask yourself 2 questions. Are you comfortable talking to someone who is being assessed? Do you enjoy working under time pressure on a computer?
Students who responded “yes” to the first tend to fit in with IELTS. Students who respond “yes” to the second are usually suitable for PTE. A free practice test of both makes the question clear.
Pearson has approved PTE test centres in Pakistan. The centres are in Karachi, Lahore, Islamabad, Faisalabad and Multan. Pearson-authorised centres are located in commercial districts of Karachi. Availability is usually good with several slots per week.
Booking is made on the Pearson PTE portal. Choose Pakistan, your city and the date of your choice. The cost will be paid with an internationally enabled Visa, Mastercard, or Amex card. Some students are caught unawares by such a card requirement. Check your centre address on the Pearson portal before travelling. Centres are sometimes updated, and unofficial listings have become outdated.
AEO Pakistan and the British Council are the IELTS providers in Pakistan. AEO is the local partner as an IDP. Their online booking is done via their websites. A great change is a big thing. In Pakistan, standard IELTS Academic and General Training have been offered only by computer since March 2026.
These formats are no longer offered in paper-based testing. Speaking is a face-to-face interview with an examiner. That element did not change with the move to computer delivery. Between June and September, test slots fill up quickly. This time falls during significant admissions seasons. Get four or six weeks in advance during peaks.
There is closer adherence to costs than many students anticipate. In Karachi, IELTS Academic on a computer is a PKR 71,320 affair. Some of the cities, including Lahore, are slightly higher. IELTS UKVI is about PKR 72, 000.
PTE Academic is also charged in US dollars, which is about USD 240-250 at the moment. That is in rupees, between PKR 68,000 and PKR 72,000. The precise value depends on the exchange rates on the date of payment. The two tests can thus be broadly compared in terms of price. They do not save significantly off each other.
One practical difference exists. PTE normally offers sending of scores to institutions at no extra cost. Any score reports over the allowance are subject to charges. Fees change regularly.
Select PTE when you are fast at typing, and you feel comfortable using the computer. Select it when you have been nervous during examinations before. Select it when you have an urgent need for results for an imminent intake. Select it when you are responsive to structured preparation, using templates.
Select IELTS if you speak confidently and naturally with others. Select it when your writing strength is in varied and natural expression. Select it when you might need IELTS to become a professional. Select it when you would need local coaching and familiarity to prepare.
Select IELTS irrespective of whether you are planning to be a teacher. Requirements and requirements reviewed will also be checked regarding nursing and other regulated professions. A decision on PTE vs IELTS when applying for an Australian student visa should be made based on your profile. You should never do what your friends just decided to do.
VICPAK’s team works with students to match the test to their strengths. Before advising you to take either, advisors will examine your English background, confidence and timeline. As an education consultant in Karachi and with Australian applicants daily, VICPAK will be able to see which tests students succeed in. Support means first checking the university you are targeting and its score requirement. That will keep students aiming at the very wrong thing.
Advisors also clarify visa minimums and the institution requirements. Practical instructions include booking, centre choice, and more realistic preparation schedules. Students are provided with a fair assessment of how much preparation they need to achieve a specific target score. In the event of a slight deficiency in the score, alternatives are discussed in an understandable manner. ELICOS, One Skill Retake and retesting suit various situations.
The two tests open the same doors to study in Australia. Each is not necessarily better than the other. It is important to get the format to your own advantage. One should not take IELTS by default, as a student who panics before examiners. A student who has difficulty with strict computer time should re-examine PTE. Call VICPAK and talk to them about which test is really appropriate for you. A single sincere talk will save months of wasted preparation.
